Decluttering (DanShaRi): Starting with Possessions & Reclaiming Ownership of Life

Decluttering, or Danshari, is more than a method of organization. It is a philosophy of life introduced by Hideko Yamashita—one that reflects our relationship with space, time, and the self.
- “Dan (Refuse)” means refusing what is unnecessary from entering our lives.
- “Shav(Dispose)” means disposing of the clutter that no longer serves a function or sparks a joy.
- “Ri (Detach)” is gradually detaching yourself from the obsession with materials thing through repeated practice of refusing and disposing.
Simply put, decluttering is not just a method for tidying up; it is an attitude toward life and a choice of values.
Through the process of DanShaRi, we continuously practice discernment, seeing more clearly what we truly need and what we can actually let go of. It begins at material level and then gradually extends to the mind, to work, and even to relationships.
When we learn to distinguish between “needs” and “wants,” life slowly becomes simple and clear. If it is unnecessary or unimportant, let it quietly leave.
